Episode 36: The Upside-Down King

15:1–20

In this episode, Jesus is handed over to the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. The chief priests accuse Jesus of claiming to be a king, but Jesus responds with quiet calm, amazing Pilate with His silence. When Pilate offers to release a prisoner for Passover, the crowd—stirred up by the religious leaders—chooses the violent murderer Barabbas over Jesus and screams "Crucify Him!" Pilate gives in, has Jesus brutally flogged, and hands Him over to be crucified. Roman soldiers then stage a cruel mock coronation, dressing Jesus in a purple robe, pressing a crown of thorns onto His head, and bowing in fake worship. Yet without realizing it, they are telling the truth—Jesus really is the King. Kids learn that Jesus is an upside-down King who wins by losing, rules by serving, and saves by dying, and that He willingly took our place just as He took the place of Barabbas.
